National notification disease of invasive Haemophilus influenzae infections

The HCSP recommends that invasive Haemophilus influenzae infections (IIHi) associated with capsulated (typable) strains be added immediately to the list of notifiable diseases (MSO), and that those associated with non-typable strains be added as soon as possible, given the following factors:

  • An increase in IIHi since the early 2000s among infants (serotypes b and a) and the elderly (non-typable strains).
  • Need to update data on the incidence and burden of the disease.
  • Preventive measures to be taken in response to a single case and clusters of cases.
  • Simple and specific case definition.
  • Cost of implementing the national notification disease proportionate to the public health stakes involved in disease surveillance.

MSO for IIHi will improve epidemiological knowledge of Hi, identify clusters of cases, enhance control of infection prevention in healthcare, social, and medico-social facilities, and analyze the effectiveness of vaccination programs.

The HCSP recommends a reassessment of the relevance of these recommendations within five years of their implementation.
