The French High Council for Public Health (Haut Conseil de la santé publique, HCSP) outlines guidance for managing clinical waste generated during the COVID-19 epidemic, for health facilities, private-practising healthcare professionals and individuals who are already or likely to become infected, in home isolation.
The HCSP recommends:
- For health facilities: eliminating waste from patients who are already or suspected of being infected by SARS-CoV-2 according to the conventional stream for infectious clinical waste from the facility without separating it from other such waste generated by the facility, and treating this by incineration or pre-treatment by disinfection.
- For healthcare professionals administering home care: eliminating the waste generated by the care procedure via the conventional stream for infectious clinical waste.
- For private-practising healthcare professionals and individuals who are already or likely to become infected, in home isolation: eliminating, via the conventional stream for household waste (in double packaging), waste that is or likely to be contaminated (particularly masks, single-use tissues and surface wipes).
