Personal protection against vectors

In 2012, a collaborative work entitled "Personal Vector Control Protection," produced by various learned societies and organizations involved in vector control and edited by G. Duvallet and L. de Gentile, received the endorsement of the French National Authority for Health (HAS).

A revised and updated version of this publication is hereby proposed on the initiative of the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) in the form of a report, drawn up by a multidisciplinary group of experts from the HCSP’s specialist committee on Infectious and Emerging Diseases, supplemented by several qualified external experts. It is divided into two parts: (1) a short text setting out the recommendations, (2) a longer text providing context for personal vector control and setting out the rationale behind these recommendations.

The recommendations are primarily intended for healthcare professionals, institutions responsible for the prevention of vector-borne diseases and any organisation wishing to implement vector control measures; however, anyone can use them to understand, select and correctly apply the preventive measures most suitable for their circumstances. These are based, in particular, on developments in the epidemiological situation regarding vector-borne diseases, the level of evidence regarding the effectiveness of the various means of protection, the European Regulation on biocidal products, and whether or not a product has been granted marketing authorisation in France. The aim is to be able to protect oneself without harming one’s own health or that of those around them, whilst respecting the environment. Preventive measures have been categorised into three levels: protection of people, protection of the home, and protection of the immediate environment. As a result, whatever the circumstances or living conditions, one or more preventive measures are recommended and can be used.
