The High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has updated its recommendations for travelers at risk of exposure to the Andes hantavirus (ANDV), which is primarily found in Argentina and Chile. This virus, transmitted mainly by infected rodents or their feces, is the only hantavirus for which human-to-human transmission has been demonstrated, although such transmission remains rare and is limited to close and prolonged contact.

The risk to travelers is considered low and primarily concerns activities in rural settings (camping, cleaning abandoned buildings, agricultural or forestry work) in high-risk areas of Latin America. In these areas, preventive measures include avoiding contact with rodents, ventilating enclosed spaces, following hygiene guidelines, and wearing appropriate protective equipment during high-risk activities.

If you develop a fever or respiratory symptoms within six weeks of a trip to an endemic area with consistent exposure, it is recommended that you self-isolate, wear a mask, and contact medical services promptly.
