The downward trend in the epidemiological situation of Covid-19 since the introduction of the Omicron variant, particularly in terms of morbidity and mortality, the absence of documented transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via blood products, and the now very limited use of diagnostic tests, which renders the concepts of confirmed cases and contact cases ineffective, have led the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) to propose an update to the criteria for selecting blood donors with regard to Covid-19. Following the latest update of August 23, 2023, from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and in line with the HCSP’s opinion of August 31, 2023, the HCSP recommends a syndromic approach, aligning Covid-19 with other acute respiratory infections. The rules for selecting blood donors must comply with the general regulations in force. Donors without a recent history of COVID-19, even if they have recently been in contact with someone infected with SARS-CoV-2, are subject to standard procedures. Asymptomatic donors with a recent positive SARS-CoV-2 test, and those presenting with fever or signs suggestive of a respiratory infection, must be deferred for fourteen days after the date of the positive test or the onset of clinical signs. Recent COVID-19 vaccination with an inactivated or mRNA non-replicating vaccine does not result in deferral if the donor's general condition is satisfactory at the time of donation.
