As the 2026 vector season approaches, which, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), begins in Europe on June 1st and ends on November 30th, the French High Council for Public Health (HCSP) proposes an update of its list of countries and regions considered "a priori" at risk for West Nile virus (WNV) transmission from labile blood products, organs, tissues, and cells. Donors who have stayed at least one night in the countries or regions mentioned are therefore subject to a temporary contraindication or screening measures related to WNV. The countries and regions are assessed according to the criteria established in the HCSP's opinion of June 16, 2021, based on epidemiological data provided by the ECDC, the World Health Organization, the Arbonet system of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Santé publique France, and locally implemented surveillance systems. The geographical changes made to the 2026 list compared to the 2025 one are in Europe, with the regional addition of Bavaria for Germany and Crete for Greece. Furthermore, unlike previous years' lists, which only applied from June 1st to November 30th, the donor selection period is extended year-round for certain countries (North Africa, the Near and Middle East) and some US states, to account for the uninterrupted circulation of the virus in these regions due to the near-continuous activity of the vectors.
