As the 2024 vector season approaches, which starts on June 1 and ends on November 30, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has updated the 2023 list of countries and regions that are "a priori" at risk for the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) from labile blood products (LBP), organs, tissues and cells (OTC). Donors who have stayed at least one night in the mentioned countries or regions are subject to a temporary contraindication or screening measures related to WNV. The criteria retained for 2024 remain those indicated in the HCSP opinion of June 16, 2021: countries and regions are evaluated based on data provided by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), on surveillance systems implemented locally and on epidemiological data available via the World Health Organization (WHO) or the French epidemiological agency “Santé publique France”. For possible removal from the list, countries were particularly considered which presented fewer than 10 cases of WNV infections for year n-3 and no cases for years n-2 and n-1. In comparison with the 2023 list and applying the aforementioned selection criteria, the 2024 WNV list includes the following modifications:

• for PSL: the addition of the entire territory for Algeria, Morocco and Turkey, the addition of Cyprus and Croatia, and the addition of a province for Germany and of several provinces for Spain and Italy;
• for OTC: the addition of Cyprus, Croatia, Morocco and Turkey.
