The HCSP (High Council of Public Health) was asked by the DGS (General Direction of Health) to propose a strategy for the prevention of everyday accidents. This first part concerns accidental poisonings in children under the age of 5. Indeed, among young children, serious poisonings are increasing, particularly those due to cannabis and medications. Prevention is not the sole responsibility of parents; it also involves manufacturers, politicians, the environment, the community, health and childcare professionals, and the Ministry of Education. Securing products/medications and the home through passive and active means, their verification, combined with direct supervision of the child, have proven their effectiveness.
The HCSP analyzed risk factors and effective preventive actions based on the products, the environment, risk perception, and parents' living conditions, and proposed a multimodal prevention strategy involving manufacturers, schools, poison control centers, communities, PMI (Mother and infant protection), and early childhood professionals. Considering social inequalities and parents' perception of risk when adapting prevention measures is essential.
