Measures to secure products and elements from the human body against the Oropouche virus

In the context of the reemergence of the circulation of Oropouche arbovirus (OROV) in Latin America and Cuba since the beginning of 2024, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) is issuing recommendations relating to measures for securing products and elements from the human body, including gametes and breast milk, that are applicable to donors who travelled to regions at risk of OROV outbreak, as well as to people residing in Guyana or French West Indies because the virus could adapt there. This epidemic resurgence has been aggravated by the occurrence of maternal-fetal complications comparable to those observed with Zika, such as miscarriages, in utero fetal deaths and malformation syndromes. This opinion complements that issued by the HCSP on the 7th of November 2024 concerning travelers and largely reproduces its general background. Overall, the HCSP recommends that people with a proven OROV infection be subject to temporary exclusion measures for all products from the human body, including semen. Milk donation is not concerned due to the sensitivity of the virus to pasteurization. The HCSP also strongly advises women involved in a medically-assisted procreation process not to travel to areas where OROV circulation is proven. Finally, the HCSP encourages the implementation of research programs to better document the infectious risk due to this new agent in products from the human body, particularly in genital secretions, and its implication in maternal-fetal pathologies.
