As the 2025 vector season approaches, which starts on June 1 and ends on November 30, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) updated the list of countries and regions "a priori" at risk for the transmission of the West Nile virus (WNV) from labile blood products (LBP), organs, tissues and cells (OTC). Donors who have stayed at least one night in the countries or regions mentioned are therefore subject to a temporary contraindication or screening measures related to WNV. The criteria retained for 2025 remain those indicated in the HCSP opinion of June 16, 2021: countries and regions are evaluated based on data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), on surveillance systems implemented locally and on epidemiological data available via the World Health Organization (WHO) or Santé publique France. For possible delisting, countries must have had fewer than 10 cases of WNV infections in year n-3 and no cases in years n-2 and n-1. In comparison to the 2024 list, the main changes for 2025 in Europe are the inclusion of countries such as Italy and Greece (excluding Crete) as a whole and no longer by region for PSL and OTC, and the addition of three new countries: Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The main highlight outside Europe in 2024 was the occurrence of an outbreak in Armenia, with around 100 human cases identified, which led to the inclusion of this country on the list. In 2025, no country was removed from the list.
