Following the confirmation of a human case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in mid-December in the Var department, i.e. outside the seasonal alert period which runs from June 1st to November 30th, the French Directorate General for Health, considering that the case was not covered by the previous advices of the Haut Conseil de la santé publique (HCSP), asked the latter to specify the relevance of the measures of security that were implemented and their possible duration. After taking into account various factors and in particular the immunocompromised background and the absence of additional transfusion risk in the patient, the continuous surveillance of WNV infections in France via the mandatory declaration, and the absence of other human cases listed in the South of France and in other Southern European countries during the same period, the HCSP validated the usual precautionary measures taken by the French actors involved in the management of blood transfusion (viral genomic diagnosis extended to the entire Var department and exclusion for 28 days of donors who had stayed at least one night in this place). Given that the 28-day eviction period has expired, the HCSP recommends the lifting of these measures on the date of delivery of the advice and the absence of implementation of other measures. In the coming weeks, the HCSP will define a new strategy for monitoring WNV infection, taking into account the lasting climate change that is causing a more prolonged circulation of arboviruses in mainland France.
