In light of the end of the chikungunya epidemic on Réunion Island, with the move to level 2 of the ORSEC system since June 27, 2025, the French Directorate General of Health (DGS) has asked the High Council of Public Health (HCSP) to clarify its recommendations relating to the criteria for lifting precautionary measures applied to products of human origin following an outbreak of chikungunya, dengue, or Zika viruses in the overseas territories. The present letter only addresses the first two viruses, as a new referral is expected to update the measures to be adopted regarding human body products for Zika. The HCSP proposes to harmonize its recommendations during an epidemic episode of chikungunya or dengue fever in the overseas territories: (i) for the measures’ implementation, it is appropriate to refer to phase 3 of the PSAGE system for the Western Indies and to level 3 of the ORSEC system for the other overseas territories; (ii) for the measures’ lifting, it is appropriate to refer to phase 5 of the PSAGE system for the Western Indies and to the “return to normal” level (alert level 2 or watch level 1) of the ORSEC system for the other overseas territories. These recommendations apply to all products derived from the human body (blood, organs, tissues and cells) for chikungunya. With regard to dengue fever, the measures will be continued in endemic areas for organs, tissues and cells.
