Update on vaccination recommendations against cholera in Mayotte

The HCSP was consulted in September 2025 to reassess the strategy for combating cholera in Mayotte in the event of a resurgence. Based on a review of the latest literature, feedback from the 2024 vaccination campaign and expert consensus, the HCSP is renewing its previous recommendations for both primary prevention and vaccination, emphasising that there is no parallel with the vaccination of travellers visiting a country where cholera is endemic.

Given the absence of new cases of cholera since the 2024 epidemic, the HCSP recommends:

  • improving access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene throughout the island, while stepping up communication efforts on the subject;
  • adhering to previous recommendations regarding the stages of implementation of cholera vaccination in the event of a possible resurgence and giving priority to the use of Vaxchora® (unless contraindicated), the only effective single-dose vaccine;
  • refraining from any preventive vaccination, including for front-line workers, in the absence of a resurgence.
  • revaccinate all individuals in the affected areas in the event of a resurgence, as the time since the 2024 campaign means that this would be a revaccination rather than a booster
