Answers for people who have been exposed to asbestos

The general direction for health (DGS) and the regional health agencies (ARS) are regularly contacted by people who have been exposed to asbestos on an occasional basis (exposure during DIY work on materials or products containing asbestos in the home, environmental exposure near a former industrial site containing asbestos, exposure to rock formations naturally containing asbestos, etc.). These people can contact the ARS and the DGS to find out about the risks of developing a pathology linked to this exposure.

The HCSP proposes communication tools for institutions to communicate with people who have been exposed to asbestos about the health risks involved.

The HCSP recommends that a document be prepared for the public that is easy to understand and accessible to all and proposes communication elements for this document.

The HCSP also recommends that requests from professionals who are not members of Occupational Health Prevention Services (self-employed workers, craftsmen, etc.) should be treated separately. The HCSP makes recommendations on this subject in its opinion of January 22, 2026.

The HCSP points out that the notice of 12 June 2025 is only the first part of its work on asbestos communications. In its opinion of January 22, 2026, the HCSP examined the identification of the parties involved, their roles in the current context and the processing of requests.
