Procedure regarding blood, organ, tissue or cell donors who have stayed in a country

that is not endemic for dengue but has reported cases of autochthonous dengue

The French High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has issued a ruling on the conduct to be adopted with regard to blood, organ, tissue or cell donors who have stayed in a country that is not endemic for dengue fever but where cases of indigenous dengue have been reported. In addition to a summary of previous HCSP recommendations for the other possible situations (overseas France, endemic foreign countries and metropolitan France), a brief epidemiological reminder of dengue fever in Europe and in the world, and notably in non-endemic countries where cases of indigenous dengue fever have been reported is presented. With regard to this new situation, the HCSP recommends for candidates to blood donation residing or having stayed at least one night in the concerned area, a deferral for a period of 28 days from the date of arrival in France or a viral genomic test for the dengue virus (with deferral in the event of a positive result), regardless of the number of indigenous cases reported in this area. For candidates for organ, tissue or cell donation, if the number of indigenous cases reported in the concerned area does not exceed 10 cases, no special measure is recommended; otherwise, the HCSP recommends a search for markers of dengue virus infection (viral genome and serology), with, in the event of a positive result, the decision to use the organs, tissues or cells based on the benefit-risk ratio.
