The HCSP recommends an Indoor Air Reference Value (IARV) for benzene of 6 µg/m³, taking into account an excess risk of 10-5 for non-threshold hematological carcinogenic effects (long-term IARV proposed by the Anses in 2024). The HCSP also recommends, taking into account the low frequency with which this concentration is exceeded in the various measurement campaigns, that the same value of 6 µg/m³ be chosen as the threshold value for which further investigations must be carried out and for which the prefect of the département where the establishment is located is informed.
The HCSP also gave its opinion on the measurement method, recommending, on the basis of the work of the Anses, active sampling for 7 days on an adsorbent medium, followed by chemical or thermal desorption and analysis by GC/FID or GC/MS to compare the measurements with the TRUE value.
Finally, the HCSP recommends that efforts to limit and reduce exposure to benzene be continued and that the possibility of proposing other indicators of indoor air quality, such as nitrogen dioxide or fine particles, PM2.5, be studied.
