The French High Council for Public Health (HCSP) has carried out a mid-term evaluation of the national sexual health strategy (SNSS) at the request of the French General Directorate for Health (DGS). It has asked several evaluative questions and made recommendations with a view to preparing the 3rd roadmap for the SNSS.
At the end of its work, the HCSP notes that the SNSS represents significant progress towards the coordination of national public policies on sexual health. Since it was launched, many measures have been taken, in terms of vaccinations, screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), access to contraception, condoms, voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion), sexual health for people with disabilities, and better regional coordination in sexual health.
However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to informing young people and their parents, training the professionals who work with them, and developing and appropriating the various communication channels, including digital ones. There is also still work to be done on research into STI vaccines and male contraception. More needs to be done to identify and take account of social and territorial inequalities in health, and to provide support for people in vulnerable health situations.
